Sample the Best Benjamin Moore Exterior Paints
We always recommend that you test paint colors (Article) in your home because lighting can completely change a color, both on interiors and exteriors.
In the old days, this meant we painted a large poster board with sample pots and a huge mess.
Now we have a better way to test paint, with Samplize Peel-and-Stick samples!
- Samples pre-painted with 2 coats of real paint from the manufacturer.
- Large 9” x 14” samples to see the color better in the lighting.
- Delivered overnight
- Colors are accurate
- Less expensive than painting a large poster board with sample pots
- No mess, and no toxic paint to dispose of
I use these in my color consulting practice for exact results. Discover Samplize peel-and-stick paint samples and sample all your favorite exterior house colors via the link below.
Best Benjamin Moore Dark Exterior Paint Colors
Dark exterior paint colors (Article) are some of our favorite hues to work with. These dark and moody colors are perfect for homeowners who want their property to stand out but also stand the test of time.
Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain
BM Iron Mountain (Article) is a very dark, but muted paint color with warm green undertones and an LRV of 10.96. It’s really more of a very dark green than a black or gray. I absolutely love using this color within exterior color palettes.
It looks much brighter in the sunlight, appearing more like a dark, muted gray-green when used outdoors. On the client’s home below, we used Iron Mountain for the siding and painted brick, pairing it with a deep black trim and front door.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Iron Mountain: Siding, painted brick
- Benjamin Moore Black Beauty: Front door, garage door and roofline
Benjamin Moore Cheating Heart
BM Cheating Heart (Article) is a soft black paint color with subtle, deep blue undertones and an LRV of 8.79. It looks much brighter outside than on the page. It’s too blue to be black and too black to be gray.
We love to pair Cheating Heart exterior paint with warm, red brick. The client’s home below features a super simple palette: Cheating Heart paint color, and nothing else.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Cheating Heart: Window trim, garage doors, siding, fascia, soffits, exterior doors, downspouts, porch ceiling
Benjamin Moore Tulsa Twilight
Benjamin Moore Tulsa Twilight (Article) is a muted, earthy purple with blue undertones and an LRV of 5.01. It looks fantastic with natural greenery and florals and pairs well with other dark exterior paint colors.
On my previous home below, we used Tulsa Twilight on the front door and the stucco, pairing it with BM Ashwood Moss siding. I love Benjamin Moore’s deep purple paint colors. Sherwin doesn’t have the same options in this color range.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Ashwood Moss: Siding, garage door
- Benjamin Moore Tulsa Twilight: Stucco gables, front porch stucco, front door, back porch railings, and chimney
- Benjamin Moore Ballet White: Fascia, soffits, window trim, corner trim, front porch ceiling, and front railings

Benjamin Moore Light Exterior Paint Colors
White exterior paint colors are always trending as timeless classics, and Benjamin Moore exterior paints are no different. We typically recommend warmer, darker white and off-white colors that would look more like a beige or greige inside.
Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee
BM Swiss Coffee (Article) has an LRV of 81.91, which makes it a darker, off-white paint color rather than a true white or off-white. It has warm, invisible green undertones that lean toward yellow..
Swiss Coffee is actually one of the lightest Benjamin Moore whites that we specify for exterior paint color consultations.
The client’s home below is a high-end equestrian property in Florida. We chose a low-contrast exterior palette that featured BM Swiss Coffee siding for the home and barn and BM Revere Pewter (Article) trim.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee: Soffits, fascia, gutters, siding, columns, window trim, window frames/mullions, front and back porch ceilings, gable peaks, breezeway ceilings, downspouts, front door trim
- Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter: Shutters, garage doors and trim, secondary doors and trim, railings, front porch column, secondary doors, french doors
- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy: Front door and transom
Benjamin Moore Blue Exterior Paint Colors
Blue exterior paint colors (Article) are some of the most beautiful! And Benjamin Moore exterior paints are home to some of my absolute favorite blue hues.
Benjamin Moore Westcott Navy
A deep, muted blue, Westcott Navy (Article) is a softer take on a classic navy blue exterior with an LRV of 9.87. It’s really more of a dark gray with strong blue undertones, so I’d consider it a cool paint color.
The gorgeous Denver area historic home had such a dramatic transformation with its Benjamin Moore Westcott Navy exterior color scheme. Although the house had many complex elements, we kept the palette simple.

Sample This Palette:

- BM Westcott Navy: Siding, painted brick, diamonds, shingles, garage door
- BM Seashell: Trim, Soffits, Fascia, Columns, window trim, garage door trim
- BM Storm Cloud Gray: Scallops, Fence, crown molding, corbels, Stone Lintels, rectangle feature on gable fascias
- BM Kasbah: Front door, squares on gable fascias, line above the front, line in the gable
Benjamin Moore Hale Navy
BM Hale Navy (Article) is a genuinely iconic navy-blue paint color that is slightly grayed out and muted. With an LRV of 8, Hale Navy is slightly lighter than a true black. Hale Navy (Sample) has subtle green undertones, which give the paint its warmth. It pairs well with red brick, yellow brick, warm stone colors and bold front door paint colors, such as on our client’s home below.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy: Siding, garage
- Benjamin Moore Pale Oak: Trim
- Benjamin Moore Caliente: Front door
Benjamin Moore Thousand Oceans
BM Thousand Oceans (Article) is a warm teal paint color with green undertones. The color is fairly muted and dark – with an LRV of 17.57 – but still very colorful.
This is one of the best Benjamin Moore exterior paints for Victorian homes, which are typically colorful. On our client’s 1897 Queen Anne Victorian, BM Thousand Oceans siding is paired with warm brown and navy accents to bring the architectural details to life.

Sample This Palette:

- BM Hale Navy (Sample) – Accent Color: Beams, porch floor, stair treads, window mullion/frames, front railing accent, back deck railing posts, lattice under deck
- BM Forest Brown (Sample) – Accent Color: Front railing detail, inner window trim, doors
- BM White Dove (Sample) – Fascia, soffits, columns, railings, stair risers, window trim, door trim, front porch ceiling
- BM Thousand Oceans (Sample) – Siding
Benjamin Moore Gray Exterior Paint Colors
Gray exterior paint colors are seriously classic. Here are some of our favorite gray Benjamin Moore exterior paints.
Benjamin Moore Willow Creek
BM Willow Creek (Article) is a mid-toned gray exterior paint with cool violet undertones and an LRV of 34.48. This is the kind of gray I describe as being the color of elephants. It’s what most people see as a typical gray paint color.
Using Benjamin Moore Willow Creek exterior paint is just perfect. It’s not too dark and not too light.
On our client’s home below, we paired BM Willow Creek siding with BM Hale Navy accent siding shingles for a classic, yet modern palette.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Willow Creek: Siding, downspouts
- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy: Architectural shingles/gables, garage door, back door
- Benjamin Moore Classic Gray: Roofline (Fascia, soffits, gutters), window trim, door trim, gable trim, garage door trim
- Sherwin-Williams Stolen Kiss: Front Door
Benjamin Moore Yellow Exterior Paint Colors
Yellow is such a bright and happy hue. Here are some of our favorite yellow Benjamin Moore exterior paints.
Benjamin Moore Hepplewhite Ivory
BM Hepplewhite Ivory (Article) is a beautiful, sunny yellow hue perfect for exterior color palettes. With an LRV of 75, this is a very light color – especially in the bright sunshine.
This color is most often used as a yellow paint color, although it is actually a beige. Hepplewhite Ivory (Sample) has yellow undertones that lean slightly orange.
Hepplewhite Ivory is a great option if you want yellow paint for a project but want to avoid the color looking too harsh or glowing in place. The client’s home below is a beautiful, historic home surrounded by greenery. The yellow exterior palette helps it glow.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Hepplewhite Ivory: Siding
- Benjamin Moore Simply White (OC-117): Trim, gable peaks, gutters, fascia, soffits, garage doors, downspouts.
- Benjamin Moore Carbon Copy (2117-10): Window frames
- Hale Navy (HC-154): Front door
- Benjamin Moore Woodlawn Blue (HC-147): Haint blue front porch ceiling
Benjamin Moore Waterbury Cream
Benjamin Moore Waterbury Cream (Article) is a warm, muted yellow paint color that looks much brighter outdoors than it does indoors. With an LRV of 57.79, it has plenty of pigment so it won’t risk washing out in the bright sun.
This is one of our favorite Benjamin Moore exterior paints for historic homes. On the client’s Victorian home below, for example, we used Waterbury Cream as the main siding color and used the same hue on some small petal details on the front door, tying this complex palette together.

Sample This Palette:

- Benjamin Moore Swiss Coffee: Fascia, flashing, frieze boards and horizontal body trim, gable trim outline, gable triple arch w/ keyhole, porch surrounding beam, column top and bottom sections, deck fascia
- Benjamin Moore Baltic Gray: Porch ceiling, porch surrounding beam cap, molding above window (currently with leaves), triangle window outer trim, gable inner double triangle and suns, gable triple arch w/ keyhole paneling, bracket stripes, upper brick stripe (top), lower brick stripe (side of house), outer and inner brick arch, doors, garage door, square shingles (side of house)
- Benjamin Moore Britannia Blue: Extension brick, upper brick stripe (bottom), middle brick stripe (side of house), scalloped shingles, window and door trim, corbel filigree, dentils, sunbeams, center of flower, bracket stripes, block corbel stacked rings, column middle sections, spindle upper bulbs, siding
- Benjamin Moore Hale Navy: Crown molding, triangle window inner trim, bead molding, fillets, dentil base, sunrays, front deck door surround, stone blocks, storm doors, handrails, spindle lower bulbs, back deck upper and lower rail, upper stripe (middle), middle stripe inner bricks (side of house), diamond shingles
- Benjamin Moore Grappa: Shape outlines, corbels, block corbels, brackets, side of house window surround, sunrays, column stacked rings, column rounded and flat rings, spindle rings, finials, plaque
- Benjamin Moore Caldwell Green: Soffits, gable corners, inner panels of shapes, bracket stripes, vents, columns bulbs, spindles, house numbers on plaque, corner squares on window surround, back deck spindles
- Benjamin Moore Waterbury Cream: Petals on squares, flower petals, brick
- Benjamin Moore Falcon Brown: Deck floor
Key Learning Points
Exterior paint colors are a very personal choice, but seeing hues on real homes can help make the decision easier. When choosing Benjamin Moore exterior paints, remember these tips:
- Dark, moody exterior paints can help a home stand out while still feeling timeless. Consider BM Iron Mountain or BM Tulsa Twilight for a dark and bold palette.
- Lighter exterior hues are truly classic. For a “white” exterior look, consider very light beige and greige paints or darker off-white hues instead, such as BM Swiss Coffee.
- Colorful exterior paints remain popular. With Benjamin Moore exterior paints, we love classic navy, like BM Hale Navy, or more colorful blues, like BM Thousand Oceans.
Remember: NEVER, EVER use paint matches from a different brand than the one specified. Results are poor and there are no standards for the sheens. Even though your painter may truly believe it can be done, don’t do it. See results from paint matching here.
No matter what, always test your paint colors. It’s a standard best practice. Whenever I test my paint colors, they are perfect, and when I don’t test they turn out wrong. Learn how to test your paint colors here.
