Gossamer Veil has long been one of my favorite greige paint colors from Sherwin-Williams. It’s a light neutral gray with green undertones, similar to Agreeable Gray but warmer and cleaner.
While Agreeable Gray tends to get the most attention from homeowners and paint color consultants alike, I think Gossamer Veil is a better option in almost every space.
I especially love to use this light greige paint color for exterior color palettes. Outdoors, Gossamer Veil looks like a soft white that holds its own even in bright sunshine.

What Color Is Gossamer Veil?
Sherwin-Williams Gossamer Veil (SW 9165) (Sample) is a warm, greige paint color that is crisp and clean. We’ve previously written a Gossamer Veil (Color review article), looking at this color for interior applications. Gossamer Veil doesn’t have the same fleshy tones that Agreeable Gray (Color review article) can have in a darker room, it’s just sheer and lovely.
The Gossamer Veil LRV (Light Reflectance Value) is 62, which makes it light-reflecting, and a great color for interior and exterior spaces. When used as an exterior paint, Gossamer Veil looks even lighter. Paint colors can look 4-5x lighter and brighter in the sunshine than in the shade, indoors or on a swatch
Is SW Gossamer Veil warm or cool?
Gossamer Veil is a warm paint color, thanks to green undertones and occasional flashes of violet. This warmth is part of what makes it so great for exterior color palettes, keeping this color from looking cold or stark even in bright sunshine.
Does Gossamer Veil look green?
No, it does not. While Gossamer Veil does have green undertones, it’s a crisp and clean paint color, and its undertones are very subtle in most lighting. This is especially true outdoors.
Is Gossamer Veil a Good Exterior Color?
We love using Gossamer Veil for exteriors. In the bright sunshine of Colorado, Florida, Texas or California, it looks almost white. We often use it as a “white” exterior trim (Article)paint color in sunnier climates, because it looks like a soft creamy white in the sunshine, especially next to dark paint colors.
What colors go well with Gossamer Veil exterior paint?
Because Gossamer Veil looks almost white outdoors, it’s a very versatile exterior paint color and pairs well with a lot of other colors.
It can be used as a “white” color in a modern black-and-white exterior palette, paired with black trim paint such as SW Iron Ore (Color review article) or SW Tricorn Black.
Gossamer Veil can also work well as the foundation for low-contrast color palettes, which we’ve been getting a lot of requests for lately from our clients. Sherwin-Williams Gossamer Veil Exterior Paint Color Palettes
Gossamer Veil is a soft, warm and lovely foundation for an exterior paint color palette. Today, we’re sharing two client homes that we worked on that feature SW Gossamer Veil exterior paint.
Both of these homes are in the Denver area, but in different neighborhoods and couldn’t be more different from each other. But still, Gossamer Veil looks beautiful on both.
SW Gossamer Veil Exterior: Low-Contrast Color Palette
The client’s home featured below is a contemporary, suburban house with stucco siding. We used Gossamer Veil for the siding, laying the foundation for a low-contrast color palette.
In addition to the Gossamer Veil siding, we used Sherwin-Williams Fawn Brindle (Sample) for the roofline (fascia, soffits and gutters), as well as the stucco window trim. Fawn Brindle is a muted green-gray paint color with an LRV of 36. It’s dark enough to provide some contrast with Gossamer Veil but also keeps the palette feeling light overall.
We used Sherwin-Williams Iron Ore (Sample), a soft black, for the garage door and front door, creating a darker accent in this otherwise light palette.
One of the reasons we chose a Gossamer Veil exterior palette for this home is that it flowed so beautifully with the ledgestone (Article) on the house.
In the summer, you really can’t see the green undertones of this palette very well, but they become more evident in the winter as the colors are brightened by the snow and the beautiful rich blue Colorado sky.
The new palette substantially lightened, brightened, and modernized the exterior compared to the original palette, as seen in the before and after photos below.
We always recommend flat sheens for stucco, and satin sheens for everything else. If the front door is in good condition, you can use a shinier sheen for a more formal look. When you paint stucco, make sure that you use a good masonry primer before you paint.

Painted Brick SW Gossamer Veil Exterior
This client’s home had a substantial transformation! The red brick ranch looks like a whole new home with its Gossamer Veil exterior color palette!
We painted the brick with Gossamer Veil. The windows had already been replaced with black mullions/window frames, and they were gorgeous! We painted the soffits, fascia, gutters and window trim with SW Iron Ore (Color review article) to align with the black window frames.
My favorite accent on this home, however, was that we used a subtle shift in paint color for the shutters and garage door, painting both with Sherwin-Williams Classic French Gray (Sample).
The front door and garage entry door were both Sherwin-Williams Still Water (Sample), a gorgeous deep blue with green undertones. This color looked especially beautiful in the entryway with the warm cedar roof.
When you paint brick, we always recommend that you use a good masonry primer, and then paint with a flat sheen.
