A Classic Coastal Living Room

This classic coastal living room makeover was part of a large beach cottage renovation.  Our wonderful homeowners use this cottage as their weekend retreat, but eventually, this will be their retirement home. They wanted a classic interior with great bones that they would be able to live with for decades. The room was empty when we picked wall and trim colors, so we used the kitchen cabinet colors and hard finishes as a starting point, along with the planned Crate and Barrel furniture.

This room is flooded with light, and made the project a pleasure!

For this online color consulting project in Rhode Island (far from Colorado), our client renovated this coastal cottage from the studs out.  The living room was my favorite room!  Read on to discover how you can create this look for your house.

Coastal Color Palette

We picked a classic color palette to tie in with the simple light and bright theme throughout this cottage.  We kept the trim, fireplace and bookshelves painted SW Extra White to tie in with the kitchen and mudroom cabinets along with the trim throughout the rest of the house.  I love the blue gray tones in the Westerly granite, and we used it because it is the local stone. The Entry

This simple entry opens into the great room, but it has this wonderful bookcase nook next to the front door.  This was a dead space before, and the books and lovely vignette bring the corner to life, along with the beautiful windows that stream light into the front door.

White Furniture with Warm Woods Create a Weekend Retreat

We chose white sofas and wooden rattan furniture from Crate and Barrel for a classic coastal look.  This sofa is only 83 inches long, and the perfect size for the roomThe Harborside Slipcovered Apartment Sofa was just the right scale for the space, and is currently on clearance sale, but if you miss it can also get the same look with the Hathaway Slipcovered Sofa, which is 81″ long vs. 83″ for the Harborside sofa.  We picked the Kingston Snow fabric for a light and bright look. The Harborside chair is not available, but you can also get the look with the Slipcovered Hathaway Chair and Ottoman in the same Kingston Snow fabric.

Transform your home with the power of color.

The Blake Grey Wash Rattan Chairs add lovely warmth to the room, with the cushion fabric also Kingston Snow.

The Tucker Rectangular Trunk is a great way to add storage with a coffee table.  We added the Blake Media Console to the Living Room wall behind the couch.  I’m in love with those white orchids!
