Exploring the House of Hackney London Flagship Store

If you’ve ever explored House of Hackney wallpaper or other home finishes, this post is for you. My team and I explored the House of Hackney London flagship store and returned with the most gorgeous inspiration for future projects.

I’ve had a long love of House of Hackney wallpaper. I used a gorgeous print in my BM Bella Blue powder room (Color review article) and have had clients use their luxury wallpaper in their homes, too.

So when my team and I were in London for a project earlier this summer, we jumped at the chance to take a field trip to the House of Hackney in London (there is a New York store, too). The staff was extremely welcoming and kind, even though we walked in off the street without an appointment. The facility was gorgeous, and we highly recommend spending an afternoon exploring!

About The Color Concierge

What is The House of Hackney?

The House of Hackney is a British luxury brand for household interior finishes, including wallpaper, fabrics, furniture, window treatments, carpeting, and accessories such as lamps and mirrors.

This brand takes rich, saturated colors in a maximalist form to the next level. At the Color Concierge, we live for color, and House of Hackney is our new obsession. We’re already dreaming up lots of wallpaper and paint combinations for House of Hackney prints!

Their rich colors are all inspired by nature. The brand prioritizes regenerative and sustainable practices in all parts of its business, from ensuring that its suppliers use sustainable practices to concentrating their paint offering so that it uses fewer resources to ship.

I first learned about House of Hackney when I saw one of their wallpapers on Instagram. I was so inspired I installed wallpaper in my home for the first time. I paired the Artemis Off-White wallpaper in my powder room with BM Bella Blue paint. The wallpaper transformed this bathroom from a boring builder’s bathroom to a gorgeous room with texture and color.  It has become the most popular room in the house.

Can you visit the House of Hackney London Flagship?

Yes, you can! And I highly recommend that you do if you’re in the area.

The London Flagship is located in the updated former clergy house of the Church of St. Michaels. Instead of a cold big shop full of things, the facility is an experiential display of their designs. It was a happy, comfortable, and joyful place, and I hope to return soon.

The entry has the most classically gothic walkway, with enfilades (repeating arches) that build your excitement for a wonderful afternoon.

What I love about it is that you can picture yourself immersed in the brand, and then pick as much or as little as you need for your own home. It’s a continuum of design, where you can pick a piece or two or immerse your home in the maximalist extreme that you see in these surprisingly comfortable rooms.

I say “surprisingly” because I usually think of minimalism as calming. Still, when a maximalist room is this expertly and harmoniously put together, it brings just as much peace and joy.

You can purchase items at the store or through several stockists on their website, including Abercrombie & Fitch. It’s great to be able to see and touch the scale of all the items, which could each become an heirloom piece for your family.

Exploring the House of Hackney London

The spaces in this Gothic former residence are named Victorian rooms: The Snug (a small room, the entry), The Parlour (living room), The Music Room, The Privy, and The Playroom.  We don’t have photos of the entry but we will take you along on a virtual tour of the other rooms with us.

The Parlour

This room in the House of Hackney London was gorgeous, friendly, and decorated with rich green organic tones. The space featured a color-drenched style covered with the same pattern – on everything from the walls to the curtains, couch, and rug. It was a look that could have easily felt overwhelming but genuinely did not. It was beautiful!

The furniture was very comfortable and had a modern shape with a non-traditional print. The gorgeous lamps throughout the space were organic and lovely.  House of Hackney uses the pineapple theme in many designs and lamps. I’ve seen this as a symbol of hospitality in the past.

The gorgeous green tones throughout the space paired nicely with warm wood trim on the windows, doors, and wood furniture.

And while there was some “white” trim along the ceilings and hearth, it was more of a muted cream than a stark white, which is of course what you would expect in nature. It all flowed so easily. Even in such a maximalist space, nothing felt out of place.

The crown molding (or coving) in this space continued throughout the house, creating unity between the rooms.

The Privy

This room was a stunning display of the power of mixing patterns. So many different designs and colors were used in this space, yet they all came together to create a gorgeous room thanks to a cohesive color palette featuring more rich greens, with cream, black, pink, and other colors.

Even the ceiling featured wallpaper!

The varying wallpaper patterns are separated by deep green paneling and trim, which helped highlight the unique prints while also tying them all together. This was a great way to display their wallpaper, but it’s still harmonious enough to look good in someone’s home.

A green bathtub in the corner and green, built-in shelves also help tie the space together. I’ve seen previous editions of this room with bathtubs in different colors. They must paint them when they change palettes.

Of course, the walls and ceilings aren’t the only design features of this room. Look at the “diamond” shapes on the floor below. What a thoughtful and subtle detail! They’ve created a subtle “harlequin” floor detail with contrasting wood floor stains.

This is a simple way to create depth and interest on a floor.

The Music Room

This room was the hardest to photograph in the House of Hackney London because of the lighting, so we only got one photo of it. But as you can see, it was a gorgeous riot of color with very comfortable furniture and signature pieces. This room had the most displays of wallpaper and decor. It was a beautiful showroom!

The Stair Landing

Every corner of the House of Hackney flagship was intentionally designed—even the stairwells! I never would have thought to add a small sofa corner next to a window as you go up the stairs, but it absolutely works.

This loveseat has the famous Hollyhock pattern, which we see so often in House of Hackney wallpaper on Instagram. I would never, in a thousand years, think of pairing it with a leopard-print stool, but it is stunning and interesting!

The warm colors look lovely next to the brick walls and all of the natural light makes this corner feel really cozy. The beauty of this corner is that it gives the visitor a taste of what will come in later rooms.

The Bedroom

There is nothing quite like the bedroom at the House of Hackney London. This bedroom is a maximalist’s dream, with pink paint color drenching that references the Hollyhock wallpaper, linked with the loveseat on the stair landing.

Once again, they’ve paired leopard-print furniture and rugs with the warm pinks of their famous Hollyhock wallpaper. It’s a playful and surprising combination that looks beautiful in this space.I love how it aligns with the stairwell loveseat moment and creates cohesiveness throughout the building.

You can also spot some of my favorite Artemis wallpaper on a corner divider in this room (pictured above) – what a great use of bold color and pattern!

The Playroom

This playroom is less for kids and more for adults who want to play with all the gorgeous House of Hackney wallpaper and finishes!

This is the room where you can create mood boards and project them on an ENORMOUS screen.  You can see Maddie Camilli, our Senior Color Designer, standing next to the screen to show the scale.

Also note the TV screen on the table that is used to control the mood boards and designs on the monitor. This amazing capability is used every day to help clients design their spaces. Now I just need to get this set-up in The Color Concierge studio.

The Washroom

This space isn’t one of the “design” rooms but the house washroom. Still, it is stunning! You know a public restroom is truly lovely when you have to take pictures!

Much like the designed spaces we explored at the flagship store, this space features many different colors, patterns, and finishes. But it all comes together thanks to a cohesive color palette and thoughtful design.

The green tile on the wall pairs beautifully with the printed wallpaper. Its warmth also helps it tie in with the deep wood trim and doors, and the warm wood floors.

Even the toilets are well-designed, featuring natural wood seats and lids that tie in with the floors and overall color scheme.
